Connect Dexi to Gemini CLI

MCP server · https://mcp.dexi.net/mcp

Gemini CLI is Google’s open-source AI agent for the terminal. It connects to remote MCP servers over streamable HTTP and handles the OAuth sign-in for you. With Dexi added, Gemini can search your notes by keyword or meaning, read them, and save notes as you work.

Your notes are the same ones Claude and ChatGPT see when they’re connected, so a decision saved from one assistant can be found from any of the others.

What you need

  1. Gemini CLI installed and signed in (npm install -g @google/gemini-cli, or Homebrew).
  2. A Dexi account — free at app.dexi.net, or create one on the approval page when you connect.

Setup

Add the server

In a terminal:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "dexi": {
      "url": "https://mcp.dexi.net/mcp",
      "type": "http"
    }
  }
}
  1. gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user dexi https://mcp.dexi.net/mcp
  2. Without --scope user the server is added to the current project’s .gemini/settings.json only.

Authenticate

  1. Start gemini and run /mcp auth dexi.
  2. Your browser opens Dexi’s approval page — sign in (or create a free account), review the access being granted, and approve.
  3. Run /mcp to confirm dexi shows as connected with its tools listed.

Try it

Try: “Search my Dexi notes for what we decided about the billing migration” — or “save a note to Dexi summarizing this session, tagged #atlas.” Gemini CLI asks you to confirm each tool call unless you trust the server.

Troubleshooting

gemini mcp list shows dexi as Disconnected

That’s the state before you sign in. Run /mcp auth dexi inside Gemini CLI and complete the browser approval; afterwards tokens refresh automatically.

The browser approval finished but Gemini still can’t use the tools

Restart the session so the server reconnects with the new credentials, then check /mcp. If it still fails, remove the stored credentials with /mcp auth dexi again and approve once more.

Disconnecting

In the Dexi app, open Settings → Connected apps to see every app connected to your account and disconnect any of them instantly. Revoking access there signs Gemini CLI out of your notes no matter what’s configured on the client side.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work in the Gemini app?

This guide covers Gemini CLI. Dexi is a standard remote MCP server with OAuth, so any Gemini surface that accepts a custom MCP server URL should be able to connect, but we haven’t tested those yet.

Does Gemini need an API key for Dexi?

No. Dexi uses OAuth: Gemini CLI registers itself and you approve it on Dexi’s sign-in page. You can revoke it any time from Settings → Connected apps in Dexi.

Can I see which notes Gemini wrote?

Yes. Notes created through an AI app are labelled with the app’s name in Dexi, and the tools return that name too, so Claude can see a note came from Gemini and the other way round.

Dexi works with any MCP client that supports streamable HTTP with OAuth — see the overview, or jump to a guide: Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Goose, Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, Cursor, VS Code, Smithery.
